GoPro unveils its consumer drone ‘Karma’ and new Hero5 action cameras

GoPro is chasing it’s slumping stock prices, and trying to appease their investors who have worried the company was a one-trick pony. Their recent announcement of a drone, video stabilization mount, and improved cameras, may be a little too late. Their stock price is slightly up from their previous $14.96 close and is hovering around $15.30. Investors are still skittish at the idea consumers want a drone; one that’s priced similarly to others on the market.

GoPro CEO Nick Woodman introduced the Karma drone today, and aside from the ability to fold up and carry in any backpack,  it’s not much to talk about. It’s a drone, it’s priced at $799, it’s compatible with GoPro. The one saving grace for the is drone is the ‘Karma Grip,’ which is a video stabilization grip that allows you to use your action camera as a handheld; a lot like the DJI Osmo.

The new GoPro Hero5 is waterproof without a housing, has a touchscreen display, and cost $399. The Hero Session update includes 4K video. Otherwise, it’s the same camera as before. If you want to buy a bundle with the Karma drone and Hero5 camera, it’ll set you back $1,099.

GoPro is hedging their bets that consumers will show their loyalty to the company when they’re purchasing a drone. They also have the upper hand on brand exposure and retail partners, as DJI has an uphill battle with consumers who don’t know the Asian company. Either way, GoPro is going beyond their action camera with a fully integrated stack of accessories. Whether this keeps investors happy is unclear, and more than likely will take months for the companies outlook to improve.

Tell us in the comments below what you think about all the new GoPro products, and if it’ll help improve the companies outlook.
