Android 8.0 Oreo won’t come to your Android phone

Google finally unveiled the name of the next version of Android – Android 8.0 Oreo. While many tech journalists, analyst, and fans assumed Gooogle would call the next version Oreo, there was some misdirection from Google. The name announcement came during the solar eclipse, where Google had one of the coolest release videos yet.

While the name isn’t a surprise, it’s still a big talking point for everyone. The official name means Google is releasing the public version. Unless you have a Pixel, Pixel Xl, Nexus 6P, or Nexus 5X don’t expect to see an update for the latest version of Android. Most phones run Android 6.0 or Android 5.0, with Android 7.0 and 7.1 only holding a little over 11% of installs.

Android 8.0 Oreo brings a lot of small refinements

Oreo isn’t a significant redesign nor is there a lot of changes that will modify the core experience of Android. The new features include picture-in-picture mode, notification improvements, better security, new emojis, and better battery life.

The biggest updates I’m excited for are the notifications that I can filter through urgent, low, medium, and other priorities. Another big update to notifications is how you’re now able to snooze them for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Beyond those updates, I am looking forward to the battery life enhancements.

Let me know what you think about Android Oreo! Are you going to get the update on a Pixel or Nexus device, or are you hoping you’ll get an update on another flagship phone?
