Casio PRO TREK Smart – first impressions

https://youtu.be/zh58jR7c9mw

Casio announced their next generation Android Wear watch at CES 2017. The Pro Trek Smart WSD-F20 is a rugged outdoor focused watch with built-in GPS (a huge user request), a full-color display, water resistance to 50m, and military compliance. The idea is – if you’re going on a hike, going to go surf, or simply explore the great outdoors you’ll need something sturdy and functional. It hits the mark for any adventurer, but the $500 price tag is a huge deterrent. I’m unsure how many outdoor explorers or smart watches fans will want to shell out for the device. For the price of the Pro Trek Smart, you can get an upgraded Apple Watch which is elegant and offers more features (more apps, heart rate, and more fitness focused).

Now don’t get me wrong, the Pro Trek Smart is a premium feeling and looking device. Casio has designed a handful of useful watch faces and apps you can exclusively use for the Pro Trek Smart. I am also an overall fan of the design even if I wasn’t adventuresome; I’d like to wear the watch around the city.

Sensors:

  • Pressure (air and altitude)
  • Accelerometer
  • Gyrometer
  • Magnetic compass sensors
  • GPS (low power)

Price:

  • $500

Availability:

  • TBD

TL;DR – Hands down looks like the best Android Wear watch for anyone who likes a more rugged look you’d normally get from the Casio lineup. The price is a minor, but impactful, downside to the watch in the long run. Casio, however, has found a niche where the smart watch may become supreme. While everyone is focusing on health and fitness, they’re looking to find the outdoor explorer who surrounds themselves in the best gear.

While I realize I’m not their target consumer, they’ve managed to get me hooked – even though the price is outside my range. Tell us in the comments below what you think of the Casio Pro Trek Smart, including the price!
