Speedtest.net tries to save itself from Fast.com with HTML5
Fast.com has become the defacto speed testing tool with its ease of use, no ads, and only shows the import info – download speed. Speedtest.net has been ages behind other alternatives with their use of Flash, a standard that’s become more of a pain than needed, and placement of more ads than necessary. The announcement and release of the HTML5 speed test site comes after Google announce they’d axed Flash next year.
While they’re one of the most trusted places to speed test, they’re sites still slow and filled with ads. Speedtest.net also gives the most information including upload speeds, ping, and download speeds. They’re also separate from any ISP, hosting company, or other internet properties making them the most open and transparent about what they do. At the same time, it’s been known around the web that ISP prioritize traffic from the site.
All-in-all, Speedtest.net is working towards staying a leader in speed testing. They’re on the right path, but with Fast.com being ad free and straightforward – they have stiff competition.
