T-Mobile is giving Pokemon Go players free data

T-Mobile’s get thanked campaign offers free Frosties, Vudu credits, Lyft Rides, and now free data for Pokemon Go! Everything you’ll get this Tuesday:

The idea of offer free data on T-Mobile isn’t new. The company has Binge On and Music Freedom, which doesn’t count music streaming or video streaming towards your data cap. Now, while you play Pokemon Go, you will have the luxury of not using your high-speed internet.

“This is what T-Mobile Tuesday is all about – thanking customers with hot, new, totally free gifts every week, and right now, nothing is hotter than Pokémon Go!” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “With the carriers’ shared data schemes, players could easily burn up the family’s data bucket – and then, hello, overages! At T-Mobile, we’re unleashing Pokémon Go so our customers can play free for a year. It’s gonna be a fantastic T-Mobile Tuesday!”

T-Mobile offering free data to Pokemon Go and not to Clash of Clans or other mobile games brings up net neutrality questions. Their other services like Music Freedom lets any music streaming apply to the data exempt streaming, but Pokemon Go is the only mobile game getting preferential treatment.

If you haven’t downloaded T-Mobile’s Tuesday app you can grab it now for free goodies if your a T-Mobile subscriber. The free Pokemon data deal won’t drop till the week of August 8th so there isn’t a rush right now, even though by then the games hype will likely have subsided.
