Nest introduces an outdoor that uses Google AI to detect people
While former CEO Tony Fadell was in charge of Nest, the company didn’t release many new products and wasn’t innovating even as Google was giving them an unlimited budget. Now only weeks after Tony step down as the CEO did Nest announce a new product: An outdoor camera which comes with software called Person Alerts which will tell humans apart from animals. It’s helpful in shooing away Pokemon hunters or telling the mail carrier to leave the package at the front door instead of in front of the garage.
Just like the indoor camera, it’ll come with a 130-degree camera and can stream 1080p video to the Nest app. A 25 power cable is included to place the camera in places which don’t quickly reach an outlet, and to deter thieves from disabling the camera there is a twist locking mechanism. On top of all that, there is a magnetic base to place in a corner or on a metal drain duct.
Nest users have been putting their Dropcams and Nest Cams outside and even just pointing outside, and there are third party housings to make the cameras waterproof. The newest push from Nest to covering our whole house and not just the inside gives me a glimmer of hope for the Google company. I want to see more home accessories from them, like light bulbs or light switches that could work with Google Home and Nest.
Nest Cam Outdoor is going to launch in US and Canada in the fall for $199, and is available for pre-order now. Nest Aware subscriptions start at $10 a month, making the cameras expensive compared to other options that don’t come with a monthly subscription.
