Microsoft is back tracking on its OneDrive storage change

In November, Microsoft announced it was changing it OneDrive storage options. The company was going to remove unlimited storage and change the free storage from 15GB to 5GB. A move that angered many their users many of who were paying for their unlimited storage. The change happen because Microsoft claimed many of its users were abusing the limited storage included with Office 365.

“We’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused,” Microsoft said in a statement. “We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community.”

The change did seem like Microsoft was saying its users were using too much of their storage, and it was going to restrict the storage for all of its users. The 360 Office subscribers will get 1TB of storage instead of the unlimited storage. Microsoft said some users were uploading full movie libraries that took up 75 TB.

Microsoft is going to let users opt back into their 15 GB of free storage, but it’s not going to let their unlimited users keep their unlimited storage. Microsoft hasn’t fumbled an announcement like this before, but they did listen to customer feedback and try to make changes according. If Microsoft is having issues with abuse, than Google, Dropbox, and others surely have storage abuse.
