Twitter may allow tweets with more than 140-character
The 140-character limit has been one of Twitter’s trademark features since the first day. Now days Twitter has begun to drift away from the strict character limit and allow longer Dm’s and possible developing a new product which would allow longer Tweets. There are ways around the character limit like taking a screenshot of a note or using a service like TwitLonger. The companies had a history of developing similar products and limiting third-party developers from accessing their firehose or api.
According to a report from Recode, the idea is already favorable with temporary CEO Jack Dorsey. “People have been very precious at Twitter about what Twitter can be and how much it can be evolved,” a senior employee told the publication. “Having Jack come in and say it’s okay makes all the difference in the world.” While the idea isn’t new, it may finally begin to gain steam within the company. Other popular ideas from users include not counting links, usernames, and pictures from counting to the character limit.
These ideas have all been around for some time, and have all been attempts at keeping Twitter unchanged. At the same time users want more space in the tweets to communicate better with their followers. Link shorteners have become widely popular, a service Twitter introduced themselves and cannibalized other third-party services like Bitly. Than services like Imgur become popular to share pictures on the service, Twitter introduced a way to upload pictures directly to the service. All attempts at keeping their services contained, and on their app to better server user’s ads.
The project is only a rumor and could be scrapped if Jack Dorsey steps down as Twitter temporary CEO. The change would be comparable to Instagram allowing landscape and portrait photos, instead of their traditional square photos. It’s not clear if Twitter users will welcome the change or all hell will break loose.
