Twitch is moving to HTML5 player

Next to YouTube, Twitch is the biggest place to watch gaming videos and livestreams. The site was running Flash players for all of its video on the site, and now its about to start changing that. Twitch is officially moving from a Flash-based player to one coded in HTML5.

Twitch’s “redesign moves half of the video player – specifically the controls – from Flash to HTML5 and Javascript.” This means that the controls on the video will be HTML5, but the video will still run off of Flash. It’s the first of many steps to build a full HTML5 player for the site, and have the best video tech around.

The player will roll out to channel pages first with the player rolling out around the site more and more. It’s going to be a gradual change, so don’t expect the site to stop using flash players overnight. Flash is on its slow death march, but has continued to live on because HTML5 has had issues with protecting the content and serving ads.

Tell us what you think about Twitch switching over to HTML5 from the old clunky flash players in the comments below!
