Twitter will remove the character limit for DMs

Twitter announced an enormous change to direct messaging on its platform: it plans to remove the 140 character limit for direct messages. Twitter has overhauled messaging in the recent months as cross-platform messaging like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, or Line have become widely popular.

You won’t be able to send longer dm’s until July, when Twitter plans to roll this update out to its 300 million plus users. The Twitter app went from hiding the messaging area to showcasing it as one of the four tabs that users use daily. It’s allowed users to select if they want to receive messages from anyone or just people they follow. On top of that they’ve also allowed group messaging within the app. The changes were small, mainly because a lot couldn’t be communicated in such short messages, but that’s all changing in July.

Twitter is now taking dm’s more seriously, but it may already be too late as people have picked the messenger that they use to communicate with their friends. Twitter could also take the route that Facebook took and break the messaging part of their app into a separate app, but that could create large user backlash.

I’m not sure how I feel about them walking away from the character limit in their direct messages yet, but I’d love to hear what you think about the move in the comments below!
