Pebble Announced a $1 million smartstrap development fund

We reported on Pebble letting it slip on how they would help fund Kickstarters that are trying to build smartstraps for the Pebble Time. Pebble has finally announced a $1 million development fund to help nurture and build a thriving hardware market around the Pebble Time.  Pebble’s open hardware accessory platform wants to spur development and commercialization of smartstraps.

Pebble didn’t give solid guidelines on how to have the company help fund your project. While they won’t fund every project they’ve said they will fund the “most promising and innovative projects.” The amount of funding each crowdfunding project receives will also happen on a “case-by-case basis.” To have Pebble check your out your project you’ll either tweet to @Pebble or by emailing devsupport@getpebble.com.

The fund is the company’s attempt to build the same community around hardware as they did with the apps for the Pebble. They are already seeing hundreds of submissions on dozens of crowdfunding websites. The Pebble team will watch Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sites to find the most promising projects.
