Twitter’s “while you were away” recap rolling out

Sometimes tweets get berried either because you follow a lot of people or you don’t check Twitter through the day. Twitter has stuck with the chronological order of tweets, but in November they said they would surface tweets that you missed when you weren’t on Twitter.

While they didn’t outline how these tweets would be chosen but it could be by how many re-tweets, favorites, or interactions a tweet gets. The “while you were away’ feature looks more like Facebook’s timeline algorithms, which bring different post up that are relevant to you.

Twitter “can use information like who you follow and what you engage with to surface highlights of what you missed and show those to you as soon as you log back in or come back to the app,” according to the company’s blog post from November.

With any change to a website users have mixed feelings. This feature isn’t the first change to the timeline which will soon include native video, breaking news alerts and more app additions.

I don’t really care for the highlighting of the tweets because I check Twitter often, and see almost every tweet. I also use Twitters list to break down my followers so I can see important tweets, so these highlights could be more useful for people who follow hundreds of people. It’s also handy for people who only check Twitter every so often and not as often as I do.
