Instagram has more than 300 million active users

Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion not too long ago, and it looks like this purchase was not only undervalued but a huge win for the social network. Instagram announced that it has over 300 million active users, up from the 200 million in march. That growth in only a few months is impressive and shows the power of images and the filters the app has made famous.

Many tech outlets has said Instagram is now bigger than Twitter, because Twitter reported 281 million active users in the third quarter. While it may be hard to say which is bigger, or if this 300 million are all real users. Twitter has a foothold with the media, politicians, and movements around the world. Instagram has pictures from celebrities, the vice president,  and has also been used to document revolutions and other political movements around the world.

“We’re thrilled to watch this community thrive and witness the amazing connections people make over shared passions and journeys,” Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s cofounder and CEO, said in a blog post.

In addition to the user numbers, Instagram announced that it will be introducing “verified badges” for celebrities and brands. It is also in the process of cutting down on “spammy” accounts.
