Microsoft buys Acompli for better mobile email

Microsoft confirmed today that its acquired Acompli, a mailbox like app designed for Outlook that’s on Android and iOS. The two companies didn’t disclose how much the deal was worth, but the reported value is $200 million. The recent push for Microsoft products and services to be on all mobile platforms makes this purchase look like a total no brainier.

Microsoft recently released new versions of Microsoft Office for Android and iOS, which brings a better and more productive user experience. Microsoft is also integrating Dropbox into its suite of office apps to edit all documents from the service, but they are also pushing OneDrive fairly heavily. The company see it need to not only support other services and platforms, but also build and compete with their own offerings.

“We’re excited about what’s possible as we build on the app’s success and bring it together with work currently in progress by the Outlook team,” wrote Outlook and Office 365 chief Rajesh Jha in a blog post announcing the news. ”Our goal is to deliver fantastic cross-platform apps that support the variety of email services people use today and help them accomplish more.”

The purchase will help Microsoft continue its mobile push, and its continued efforts to stay relevant. The app will also continue to get updates and be improved upon, while the team makes its move to work on other Microsoft projects. The new thing is to buy companies and keep their teams separate, but still have them work within the company. Tell us if you like these new productivity apps for email or will stick with the old school ones.
