iOS 8 Install Stall at 50%
Adoption rates of iOS updates have normally be high and recording breaking. However, iOS 8 has stalled at 47%. Information Week says iOS 7 saw a 70% adoption rate around this time, but a large amount of space iOS 8 requires is stopping many users from installing. But iOS 8 installation rates remain stagnant, increasing in users just 1% since Sept. 21.
Now compared to KitKat, Android’s latest operating system, which is at 25% Apple blew by the Google mobile OS. The biggest issue for users not installing is the 5GB of free space required, even though you can plug into a computer and update through iTunes for no space at all. Most users however don’t use iTunes on their computers to sync their phones because iCloud did away with that need.
There was also the problematic rollout of iOS 8.0.1, which caused service and Touch ID issues for many Apple users. So much so, in fact, that Apple pulled the download and publicly apologized. It later released iOS 8.0.2 to fix the errors. Another reason some users may not update is if they have an iPhone 4s the update will cause the phone to run slower because of the process intensive iOS 8.
Now if this doesn’t increase in the next year that will be a huge surprise because many users should start getting upgrades through the holiday season and into next summer.
