Amazon Testing Kindle Unlimited Subscription Service
Amazon has made subscription based services like Prime a core part of their business operations. Prime now offers instant movie and tv streaming, select books on loan, and free two-day shipping. In addition, Amazon has now posted some images of a Kindle Unlimited service that would allow unlimited, subscription based access to kindle books. This would compete directly with Oyster books, a similar service that has popped up recently.
GigaOm, which first reported on the subscription service, said many of the books seem to be titles that are already part of the company’s Kindle Owners Lending Library service. The service would cost $9.99 month separate from Prime which may surprise some, considering Amazon recently added an unlimited music streaming service at no cost.
Many ebooks can run you 9 to 10 dollars, so a subscription service with no restrictions on how many books you can read would appeal to many avid book lovers. I just think its interesting that Amazon isn’t trying to expand its Prime offering by making this a separate service. Perhaps the cost of licensing the books is too high to make it free.
