Android 4.4 KitKat Announced

Google’s Sundar Pichai, head of Android and chrome, and soon to be leaving has confirmed the name of the next version of Android. The next version of Android is following the food tradition, but it took a name brand name, KitKat. Yes, this is a name brand chocolate bar, and super smart marketing move for both companies. I’m interested to see if KitKat has paid any money for this name, or if Google just pulled this name out of a hat. Android.com confirmes the name, but we are wondering why Google didn’t go for 5.0 that has had rumors going around for months now.

The details are slim right now, Google did tease its upcoming release with the following line:

“It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

Nestle will be promoting Android, while KitKat gets promoted by the version of Android. There will be giveaways of Nexus7, Google Play credit, and other Google products. The BBC claims that no money exchanged hands, but thi is a fun and experimental deal with the two companies. Pichai also posted on Google+ that there have been over 1 Billion Android device activations and that “the candy bar that’s one of our team’s favorites”.
